Junction negotiation

I am thinking of making some videos showing how to negotiate certain junctions. This has come from lots of other threads with people not knowing what to do at certain junctions and how to get around them (especially RABs).
These would obviously be open to critisizm and opinions and I would try different techniques to see which is best. I might even learn something myself.

So who would be interested in them? I am hoping to make a whole series aimed at giving cyclists a first person view of how to be defensive and safe around junctions (as that is where the most accidents happen). The junctions would be mixed of course, some small and some large.

Just refer people to the official guidelines, that way you won't open yourself upto "critisizm (sic) and opinions" and have to spend your evenings defending yourself unnecessarily

A nice enough idea but the correct way is out lined in the highway code [yes it is for cyclists too]. Not saying in all circumstances it's the only or best way or that everyone else on the road follows it either but it is the "correct" way.

The highway code gives good advice on the rules of the road, but not how to negotiate it. That is why I thought about a video guide. A realtime step-by-step instruction on how to negotiate junctions and RABs.
The vids could also be included in bikeability training.

'fraid not Matthew. The whole point of bikeability training is to use real life, on road, practical situations, not video footage of how other people do it. As a national standard instructor trainer, I would be horrified if I came across an instructor using video footage to teach bikeability.

What a negative bunch we are. I'm sure Matthew could generate some good discussion with videos of some tricky junctions - especially if they could highlight what NOT to do at the junction. You may ask the question of how Matthew gets an audience for his videos outwith the select few that inhabit these pages, b but that's another question.

I agree that instructors should not be using videos as the primary training vehicle, but there's nothing wrong with having some videos out there that highlight good and bad practice - and Gaz' Silly Cyclist series is a good example of the latter.

Understandable, but I meant in a 'This is one way to negotiate it' or 'This is an example of ____ junction' type of way. I know that it wont replace actual tuition, just like driving tests. But it could be used to aid getting your point over or illustrating a certain type of junction.

It could be highlighted in the description but I am not going to purposefully put myself in danger by doing what you SHOULDNT do at a junction.

I would be happy to do it on junctions with little traffic but not on major roundabouts or busy intersections.

I've not studied it to that degree TBH, but I've been on the roads for nearly 30 years on 2 wheels, 4 wheels and more. From a 9kg bike to a 7.5 tonne wagon, and as a private driver, rep, white van man, taxi driver and contractor, and I haven't had an issue yet so I suspect what I was taught at my cycling proficiency and when I learnt to drive was correct.

I'm not having a dig, just trying to save you the grief I suspect some will direct at you if you go ahead with this idea, but if it makes you happy then fill your boots and I sincerely wish you every success.

Well if someone gives me grief because I have negotiated a junction in a safe manner then they have some serious problems.

I thought that videos of negotiations would be a good idea. I could take different exits on roundabouts and try different techniques.

Just do it Matthew.
Bung them up on your You Tube channel, then when a junction discussion pops up you can direct people to the video on your channel.

Though to be honest, I think your time would be better suited to making more cycling movies & clips.

Awaiting new Spesh bike in the new year for that. I have had people I know ask when there will be another one. Problem is that my race bike is kitted out for commuting now so it would look out of place in another movie. Plus the weather isnt really right for doing one now.

A movie can have what ever you like in it.. there are no parameters..do's and donts. It's only hampered by your imagination.

A winter commute film would be interesting. As like your film of the waves.
