I think that's why the look over your shoulder is great. You can see if a boy racer is coming up behind you as you approach a pinch point and choose to hold back, if necessary. Also on occasion I have looked back and seen the driver back his vehicle off - it is as if once they have seen your face and recognised you as a fellow human being their inclination to rush past you is curbed.
That was another crucial thing I took from the cycle instructor training: always talk about the people in or on the vehicles - drivers not cars; cyclists not bicycles. It helps to humanise the roads.
