Cycling home just now, and a dog (looked like a collie of some kind, not much good on dog breeds) decides to sink its teeth into my calf. Got a nice bruise coming up and the skin's broken, but no blood to speak of.

I've washed it, now surfing to see what I should do next (if anything). First time it's happened to me.

Do you know who owns said dog?

I'd sharpen the narrative up somewhat Stevie - it has to be a whippet or greyhound otherwise you'll get nothing but derision!

ps Get something antiseptic on it ASAP.

Well if you can trace her or find her again then you can have a word or report it. Likelihood is, if it bit you it might bite someone else and the someone else might be a child. Even as a dog owner, I'd be inclined to do both, it's not acceptable to allow something like that to happen.

In the meantime, much sympathy, shakes you something like that.

Antiseptic's a good call. I've found this website: http://www.nhs.uk/Conditions/Bites-human-and-animal/Pages/Treatment.aspx so I've had my calf under the tap in the bath whilst surfing and typing this.

Bloody hurt at the time. I think the dog already had a half-muzzle on (looks like a lead tied across its jaw half-way up its jawline), so I might have got a proper mauling if it wasn't for that. I dismounted/stumbled from the bike and for a few seconds the Red Mist descended. I don't know how I'd fare in a fight against a dog (probably not very well) but for a moment I was willing to grab my d-lock and find out.

I did a call out a few months ago and there was pit bull on the yard it snuck up behind me and I felt a slight tug but in that slight tug it wripped my jeans from the bottom to half way up my thigh I had to go home and get changed. Thank god it missed my calve
But it sure does shake you up. I wont enter a yard or house now unless the dogs are under control

Probably not a muzzle but a Halti which stops it pulling but doesn't make any difference to it's mouth movement. If it was a Collie it's not uncommon for them to nip hard/bite, they circle around and then come in fast like you're a sheep. So probably not out to do serious damage, no consolation I know but still you need to report it I'd say or speak to the owner and see if she is concerned/bothered/receptive and trying to deal with it or couldn't give one, in which case the police will definitely visit her.

Is your tetanus up to date?

True, these incidents can be very nasty. I got off lightly. The dog owner was there at the time, she pretty much saw the whole thing apart from the initial bite. She was very apologetic: fine for me but not fine if someone had been more seriously injured.

I think she'd let the dog off the lead to run in a green space alongside a cycle path, and I surprised them both: I should have rung my bell to warn of my approach: ahh but for the benefit of hindsight.

Good idea about the tetanus: mmm, a Friday evening in casualty, can't wait.

I love your attitude "I surprised them both: I should have rung my bell to warn of my approach". No, SHE should either have had the dog restrained, or sufficiently trained not to attack people in public.

Straight onto the old Bill I would say.....

Just come back from A&E: had a tetanus jab and a course of antibiotics. Thanks for the advice from everyone: in case this happens to me again I'll know what to do.
