A neighbour/friend bobbed in to see if I would help a friend of his with a computer problem. No probs, and off we went. Said friend of neighbour is loaded. Self-made director of several business, so fair play to that. So he's not short of a few bob; new Merc SL, plus a god-awful Land Rover brick like people carrier/hummer-wannabee that he leaves over here (he's only here maybe 3 or 4 weeks a year).

Anyways, we get to this blokes house and he shows me to the computer. I sort the problem pretty quickly (getting his Mac laptop onto a wireless network) and he disappears into the garden with the laptop. I shut down the desktop then me and the neighbour follow blokey into the garden. He's happily browsing the web, looks up briefly, shakes my hand, and says to my neighbour 'Settle it for me Jerry' and goes back to browsing. I've been dismissed!

This guy didn't offer me a coffee, chat or anything normal like that. He just expected to do the job and go, pay me off. I felt cheap. I don't mind doing stuff like that for people. It's a doddle for me. I wasn't looking to be paid. A genuine 'thank you' would have sufficed.

Don't think I'll be bothering to 'help' again!

And I bet he wasn't French, either!

Nah, ignore him and his like; they're not worth bothering with.

Mind you, a bit of sabotage at some point might make things 'even'!

Come on, you don't get to be loaded by being a mensch. Like you say, next time he needs you, Just Say No.

What an arse.

You'd win your bet... he's Essex born and bred.

And, yes, I agree swee'pea, anyone that treats anyone like that is an arse.

In all my years of being self-employed, I have never had anyone treat me like that... oh, I lie, once; a partner in a firm of solicitors on Kingsway. It just don't get it. It lacks a very basic humanity.
