...and why?

I spend hours of my life thinking about buying new bikes - and occasionally, wondering why on earth I bought the ones that I have (that'll be the shady late night ebay purchases then... ;-) ) - and it'd be good to know what goes through other peoples' minds...

Simplest reason is because I wanted it!

My road bike is a necessary evil so I can enjoy longer rides than are feasibly with my favourite bike.

My favourite bike, I bought in the hope it would be low-maintenance as it has hub gears and drum brakes. I have wrecked one hub gear, but on the whole I think I've spent a lot less time and money maintaining it than I would a derailleur geared v-braked bike so I'm happy I made the right choice (and it's mainly about aesthetic anyway).

My folder I bought simply so I could do some rides starting further afield. It has not disappointed, but being 2nd hand and having been kept on a boat has needed a fair bit of maintenance. I've since bought a car rack so I arguably don't need the folder any more but it comes in handy sometimes as a spare.

I'm always thinking about n+1, but to be honest I don't really want another pair of tyres in my garage to keep pumped up so have managed to avoid the temptation for the last few months. If I do get another it will be as a winter bike so I don't have to swap to winter tyres and back again every year.

I just bought a Rockhopper ... on the basis my Sirrus is too uncomfortable for dirt / gravel paths ... and my Crosstrail feels too large for dirt tracks.

The Rockhopper is overkill for what I need but what the hell

Now looking for new tyres for the Crosstrail that make it more stable on dirt / gravel ... i.e. wider tyres

Currently waiting delivery of a Workcycles FR8 to add to his 'n' hers Thorn Sherpas and a Christiania as the final part of our plan to replace four wheels with three and two.

We went for a FR8 (pronounced "freight") because one size fits both, it's built to last, it has an upright riding position, hub gears and roller brakes, and we like Henry's approach to making bikes. We also, despite our initial misgivings, like Really Useful Rob's approach to selling them, and are happy to see him get his whack of the cost.

I bought my Scott Speedster a few years ago because it looked superb in my eyes. Honestly ,with very little knowledge of what bike I needed or what makes a good roadbike I bought it on impulse.

And havent regretted it for one minute.

Specifications gear ratios etc etc are obviously important but if you dont look at your bike as an object of beauty I think your missing out on a big part of the enjoyement of it.

I bought a Surly Cross Check because I wanted to go further than the 50 or so miles a day than I can manage on my MTB but I don't want a bike that was too 'specialised.' To me cycling is about fun, exercise and exploration, not about average speeds. The Surly was more than I really wanted to pay for a bike but it's light, with a comfortable, well balanced riding position and I abso-bloody-lutely love it!

But surely it has to be both Italian and red to do that?

It is, I got the red and black one

Awaiting delivery of a Genesis Equilibrium 20. It won't be with me until mid june

Why... The Croix de Fer I've got just now is great as a commuter, but I've started going out on weekend rides in addition to my commute. So the plan is to keep the CdF as my commuter and have the Equilibrium as the 'sunday best' bike

I just got an Orbea aqua San Remo. It's my first road bike and I bought it for 2 reasons. 1 because I did alot of research and checked out all the bikes in my price range. None of them had as good a spec as it was last years model with £200 of it. And 2 because it was a bit different and I liked the look and feel of it.

Bought a 2010 Secteur Elite a couple of months ago. I found myself using my MTB for road riding only so seemed sensible to get a road bike but wanted to ensure it was right for me without spending too much.

I love it so much I can't wait to upgrade to a carbon- just gotta get some funds!

And of course, bikes are deffo a thing of beauty!

In between here and there
Bought a 2010 Roubaix Comp in November rode it a few times and then wrapped up for the winter, been back on it since March 1200 miles in and still loving it.

Went from a Marin 29er, which I rode with the kids at the weekend and I really do not think I could face my 15 mile commute on it now, which wiull mean when the weather turns again I will need to buy another bike for the winter
