I am not normally happy about other peoples misfortune but last night was an exception.

Disturbed by some blue flashing lights outside our house last night at about 11.30. On investigation a Police car had pulled someone over near our house for some reason. The reason became very clear when the driver staggered from her car to the back seat of the Police car. She was breathalysed and arrested much to the distress of the driver and much more distressing for her drunken passenger. The passenger was in "volume turned up to maximum mode" so it was easy to hear the circumstances. The passenger had been in town getting drunk, decided to go home but instead of spending a fiver on a taxi home or walking he called his partner to come and pick him up. Turns out she had been drinking also and was considerably over the limit. There was much moaning from the passenger who started to moan at the drunk driver. On a normal Saturday the driver may have gotten away with drink driving but being Halloween weekend the Police had stepped up patrols. Hopefully she will be banned, fined and learn her lesson, never drink and drive.

It would bring some satisfaction, to know that the passenger too was being prosecuted for aiding and abetting, or possibly incitement...

In which case you might be a material witness. Might be worth calling the cops.

I think that the police making the arrest were best placed to make that call.

The husband was sensible in recognising his own inability to drive but he might not have been able to judge his wife's ability/fitness to drive.

I see nothing but vindictiveness in the proposal.

I was hoping for a custard related thread.

I thought that it might have been a thread with an edible theme.

Now that food has been mentioned:

I had an Asda chocolate and raspberry confection which almost defeated me. I've never had anything so intensively chocolatey and had to force down the uneaten portion that my wife abandoned.

Vindictive? Let me put it this way. The passenger was sufficiently compos mentis to shout out a résumé of that evening's goings-on, for all within earshot to hear. If so, he was also capable of asking his partner if she was fit to drive. He either failed to do so or ignored her response. That makes him culpable. There is nothing vindictive in wanting to ensure that as many drunk drivers as possible are kept off our roads.

Anyway, I was only suggesting that BSRU should make himself available to the police in case they want an independent witness. I never said that the police were not well-placed to decide which charges might be brought...

Since there were four cops, one with a camera, I think there is no need for me.

To get done for aiding and abetting a DD offence you would have to be in the passenger seat pouring booze down the drivers throat. No chance in this case, the guy was merely a passenger and not responsible for his wife's condition.

Imagine how that would play in court

QC "Did you not realise the driver was pissed?"
Car Passenger "No, I was too busy singing Eskimo Nell and puking in the glove-box"

but sounds like it may be accurate!

I think its a trifle strong to be accusing the husband of aiding and abetting DUI. Its Eclair to me he had very little to do with pudding her in the driving seat. Seems she was a silly tart. Any case against him would crumble. Hopefully this will gateau ver the point to her that you can't drink and drive. She was ma jelly lucky she didn't maim or kill someone.
