Just give me the basics - is it waterproof?

I am looking for a new waterproof jacket

In Gunwharf there is a new Pearl Izumi outlet store so off we went

There are all sorts of technical names for the Pearl Izumi and Shimano materials, but they are not labelled as to what they actually do

None of the labels use words like "waterproof" or "windproof", and even askingthe assistants - they are cagey about it as well

All I want to know is if I go out in the rain will I be dry, get wet, get very wet, or get drenched?

Surely a simple thing for the label?

there are degrees of waterproof-ness surely, thus no simple thing to describe in one word, and, whilst a fabric may be waterproof enough for our needs, a garment made from it may yet turn out not be waterproof in the common-sense way depending on its construction.

I think Goretex is water repellant rather than proof or resistant.

The only waterproof jacket I own is by Montane. It's made of polyurethane-coated nylon.

And I bet you sweat like a fat lass at a disco in it on the bike!

Yes: the Garmin Edge GPS computers, for example, have an IPX7 waterproof rating.
