and it wasn't pretty. A mate phoned, very drunk, berating me for road riding. For 45 minutes I tried to explain that I was not turning my back on MTB'ing but his drink addled brain was having none of it. I kept thinking this ranting drunk used to be me. I am so glad I am no longer like that and make people listen to my drunken tiraids!

there's nowt worse than being in the company of drunks when you are sober. It's funny for about ten minutes but it soon gets tiresome.

I lost a good friend to drink. Good friend? Probably the best mate I have ever had. Clever guy, intellegent, funny, gifted writer, but for some reason would get out of his mind on booze time and time and time again.

He he lost his business, lots of friends, any relationships of any worth with women, lost contact with his son and eventually at the young age of 42 he died, drink related.

When it gets a grip it isn't easy to get away.

I know that story so well. Much of it applies to me. I know not how close I came to death but lost most things of value. I hate it when I see others in that state especially as I know there is nothing I can do.

My Irish friend was also one of the wisest most sensible blokes I ever knew; he was enormously popular and loved by everybody. But he would also get out of his shed on whiskey at weekends and died at around 45 with liver failure. His funeral stopped the traffic in Ripon.

Yeah, but, they're like so totally radical, dude, like, man, there was like this totally gnarly dropoff man, and like I totally tacoed it man, but it was ok because we had weed. Woah! You're still riding hard-tail? Get with the new millennium man! That's like so totally not cool dude.

Dude, it never fails to amaze me that mountain bikers will drive for three hours to spend an hour throwing themselves down a mountain then drive home again...

I made a (drunken!) bet with my mates once that I would go to the pub with them every night for a month and not drink alcohol. I managed it but it was the most boring month of my life. Hearing the same jokes 3 or 4 times in one evening, the slurring, the staggering about, waiting 45 minutes for a taxi because they were incapable of walking 1.5 miles home ...

I realised that I couldn't go on like that - either I had to dump my mates and do something more interesting than getting pissed with them every night or I had to start drinking again. I made the wrong choice!

It took me another 5 years to get really sick of it and then I went off to university. I was the about only sober student there! (I only went out a couple of times in the 3 years that I lived in Manchester.)

why.

I live in Chislehurst in Kent. Nearest mountains are in Cumbria or scotland....the rest are just hills.

How much spare time do you think I have to be able to cycle over 500 miles for a weekends mountain biking? next you'll be complaining that wind surfers travel 3 hours by car to go to the coast to surf, surely they can do that in their own neighbourhood

??

unless you are talkiong about offroading or trail riding, which i do from my front door...but it's not mountainbiking
