I had an ex with a drink problem. He would say he was 'a heavy drinker'. Hmm. Lost all his/our friends, people simply got sick of being out with someone who was rude/arrogant/argumentative to taxi drivers/waiting staff/friends or of pulling him out of physical fights.
I became expert at avoiding eye contact with him when he came home steaming drunk ready for a row, ready to pick a fight over nothing, or sticking elastoplast on injuries he had no idea he had/ where they'd come from.
The strange thing is, years later, I find the smell of red wine disgusting - it's just the association I suppose.
I am even wary of going out to do's where there is going to be a lot of drink - seeing other people in a state really scares me and I tend to go home before it's really late.
