I saw a programme where a set of people were tested for pain endurance with hands in iced water. One lot were given bog standard Boots painkillers from a bottle, the others pills popped from a foil Nurofen branded packet. Both groups improved their endurance from no painkillers, but the Nurofen lot did significantly better than the generic.
Except it was all the same pills, the generics had been packaged as Nurofen. So fancy packaging and the extra couple of quid on the price does apparently have a placebo effect.
