Just had what could be (to some people) a VERY scary threatening email.

1st off, I have copied it and forwarded it to the authorities.
Its a lengthy email but in a nutshell the sender tells me they have collected all my private details including bank account and passwords plus lots of other stuff.
He/she gives me 2 choices 1. Pay them $600 in bit coins.....I have 24 hours to do this or 2. He will sell it all on the dark Web.
The only worrying part is that I copied it to my folder and the actual email then instantly disappeared which is a shame.

Its a scam.

Do they actually give any personal info in the email at all?

No. Its almost funny in that he says the fact that he has my email details is proof that he has everything else.
If anyone 'in the know' thinks i should post a copy on here i am happy to do so

@Dave7 - if you're sending Bitcoin then could you send some my way?

The only incriminating evidence I have on you is that you like bicycles. But that should be enough to horrify many people.

Otherwise just ignore it. I've had many purporting to have incriminating videos of me on webcam which they'll remove if I send them money. Fine, I'm on my webcam a lot with work and would happily share them with anyone, although I'm not sure academic meetings and/or online lectures/seminars are that titillating however you never know  .

The fact that it disappeared if probably due to Gmail -or whatever - noticing and going through and deleting them all from the centre

At one point I was helping a few people with things like this and the people that had that type of email were all on Hotmail

the people on gmail didn;t get them even thought they seemed to have all the criteria

We saw a few appear and then go - but all on gmail
we contacted Gmail and they said they constantly scan for that sort of Spam/scam email and delete the ones that have got through and block any more
Microsoft were very much not so good at it at the time

I suspect this is what happened - the one you got was an early one
then the email people noticed and block the rest and deleted any that had got through

I do not normally sing the praises of big companies run by billionaires
but in this case Google actually do a good job

sometimes anyway!

It is using a weird font - looks normal but I think some letters look like they are normal but are not

They do that to try to confuse systems scanning looking for key words

but certainly a scam sent to a huge list of emails
there is no actually things there to indicate that they have any data

and knowing your email address is nothing - it might even be generated by a programme from basic rules with no knowledge of whether it is right or not

main thing is to never reply to them -- doing so confirms that the address is real and active - which they can sell

It's a bit like the robots dialling numbers, a reply confirms the e-mail address is as you say live.

Fortunately I swiped it and put it in the gallery so could send it the the Gov cyber people.
