Just my 2 pennies worth - BB30's

I have had nothing but trouble with BB30 bottom brackets. I ride a Cannondale SuperSix 105 and had the BB replaced three times in a 6 month period and it's just started too go again.

I don't know what experience others have had but in browsing the web there renowned for failure.

I wont be buying another BB30 configured bike anytime soon.

Problem is many now use BB30 or their own version.

I had problems with my CAAD10, converted it to Hollowtech II and it's been absolutely perfect ever since

Two bike mechanics I've spoken to in the last few weeks reckon Hollowtech is the best bottom bracket by a long way.

I've not had any issues with the specialized implementation of BB30 called OSBB on any of my specialized bikes and will continue to use it.

OSBB is basically the same as BB30 but with a little tighter tolerances and a 0.5mm difference in the clip-to-clip dimension

I had issues when I first bought my Boardman CX team, the bearings lasted less that 100 miles, but since I switched to the sram bearings I've not had a single issue in two years and they are still running smooth as the day I fitted them, although I have to admit I did stripped them, cleaned them and re-greased them with finish line ceramic grease before I fitted them.

No issues on my CAAD10 , I have a Supersix I havent used yet mind. I did extensive research on both bikes and never found anything to suggest an issue with BB30.

No wonder doctors and surgeons advise not looking up symptoms on the internet, as if you look hard enough you will find something that supports you opinion, rightly or wrongly.

Really? Just Google BB30 issues, the internet is awash with peoples issues.

That said I do believe the earlier problems were down to a dodgy batch of bearings, (FWIW I bought my CAAD10 new in 2011), and that these are all sorted now, but IMO BB30 will always be the answer to a problem that simply never existed.

My point was that unless you stick "BB30 issues" into a search engine you will be none the wiser. I read every post on the net about a CAAD10 over 6 months (thousands )and saw a couple of posts at the most about the bottom bracket.No more than any other BB issues so it didnt bother me . People only post when they have an issue. so the other 150,000 satisfied customers stay quiet. As a matter of fact more issues came up about the RS10 wheelset - mine have been fine.

For the OP to say they are 'renowned for failure' on a Cannondale bike isnt correct.

No worries. FWIW mines the DA model and came specced with Shimano RS80's, however I wanted something with a bit more bling so I did a deal with the store and upgraded them before I collected the bike to Ksyrium SL's

The problem is the assumption that they are non serviceable. With a little maintenance they tend to behave you can with a little practice grease them, using a good quality water resistant grease on the bike with cranks off and a pin or Stanley knife to carefully peel away the bearing cover to get some grease in there. The left hand side is the one that usually goes as it seems to be more exposed to the elements.

Although I do agree that Hollowtech II is a fit and forget option, but then you get the supposed stiffness gain of 30mm axles with the BB30

This shouldn't be at all necessary though IMO, and as you say HTII is fit and forget. In fact I've not had to touch mine since I converted it over 2 years ago, and that suits me down to the ground

I said renowned because of experience I gleaned from other Cannondale users, granted some will have positive experiences but I have now had to have the bearing replaced 4 times in 9000 miles!! and it wasn't cheap. It leaves me with a bad taste in my mouth for Cannondales. I'm not about to go out and risk a load of cash buying another Cannondale nor recommend one to friends as once bitten twice shy.
