The point is that we shouldn't have to ride defensively - neither should pedestrians have to concede to cars (especially on crossings). The fact is that drivers are generally self-serving bastards...I refer in particular to 4x4 drivers, BMW drivers and taxi drivers. Bus drivers get zero out of 10 for patience in my book.

The bicycle actually preceded the motor car - we woz 'ere first!!

We had a leaflet distributed recently in York, advising cyclists and pedestrians on keeping safe. The cyclist advice was sensible - not going up the inside of long vehicles at junctions, and adopting a good position to be seen when approaching a side road with car waiting to pull out. Just the stuff we'd all tell newies.

The advice for peds? When crossing at a pedestrian crossing, on the green man, keep looking as you cross, in case a car doesn't stop.

Now that is also sensible - my Dad drummed it into me when I was about 5. But to see it in a council leaflet - kinda puts the onus on the pedestrian to take all the care.

Also, it was 'traffic' that might fail to stop, not DRIVERS. So it's all the cars' fault really.

Watch the cyclist on the path.

Although the two pedestrians may be "in the wrong" fro walking two abreast, the cyclist hardly slows until the last minute, and then clips the guy with the shopping bags. Then when I stop to see if he is alright we both almost get taken out by someone on a Claud Butler, who must have seen what had happened but still charged through without slowing down.

Two very shaken pedestrians, and two questionable cyclists!

Well done that man! I think you went a good way to restoring the name of good cyclists in the eyes of the public. And isn't it lovely to ride down that road from Sainsbury's to the viaduct during rush hour?

As regards people driving like twohats ... everyone hates them and I'll guarantee they have "issues". Whenever I meet someone who is obnoxious/boorish/belligerent, I try (note "try") to stop for a second and imagine how miserable life must be for them, having to be in conflict with everyone around them all day every day ...
