Cut to the chase. A lorry overtakes a cyclist, and in doing so forces a person travelling in a car coming the other way to take avoiding action.

Person in car blames cyclist.

For anyone that doesn't know beddington lane in croydon, it is a narrow road (for it's purpose) with a large amount of HGV's and delivery lorry's using it. People also use it as a cut through to avoid the traffic on the purely way.

The cycle lane isn't very long (it lasts half a mile at most), and as you can see from this street view ends abruptly and puts you on a very poor conditioned road with no cycling facilities.

I've ridden it a few times but i try to avoid it at all costs because of it's width, the poor condition and the drivers that use it.

After reading through the first page and looking at the image where he describes a cycle lane being behind some trees. He is full of crap, there isn't a cycle lane going north on that road at all.
The cycle lane i mentioned is going southbound.

Thanks for the link to a Street Map of the area, Gaz. I'm intrigued about how Garbage thinks the cyclist was to blame for lorry driving on the wrong side of the road, almost intrigued enough to register there myself.

Edited to add: Actually, having read the rest of the thread, I won't bother. There seem to be some spectacularly moton-afflicted (yes, Thine Wonk with your "90% of cyclists ride against the traffic laws and either don't have proper lights, or don't stop for traffic lights etc " I'm looking at you) posters on there.

That's a good point in relation to Garbage's little drawing. At the point Garbage shows, there is no cycle lane at all, it finishes just north of there, as can be seen in Gaz's link.

Ha! Delicious irony! As pointed out by Mr Cellophane on the digitalspy thread (also Gaz here). The OP (on DS - not you CP!) calling himself "garbage...." (very apt name if you ask me) puts up a sketch (see post#21) showing where he alleges the cyclist was, and saying "cycle lane is metre behind the trees" - at a point where there is no cycle path. What's more, there are no trees in that view, only a hedge.

Perhaps "garbage456" would care to register on here (the username seems to be free ) and explain how come he demands that a cyclist use the cycle path on a road where there is no cycle path. Could make for an interesting debate....

Nearly spat my tea out when I read the viewpoint that a cyclist going down a narrow road is acting irresponsibly, especially in this case where if someone was to overtake a cyclist dangerously and cause an accident it would somehow be the most vulnerable person's fault.....

Looking at it on streetview, not sure I'd fancy riding in that cycle lane either. What's the chances of being wiped out by a fast turning vehicle as you cross one of the many side roads?

At the other end, where exactly does it end? It appears to just kind of disappear, the sign here being the last hint that it's a shared path

I can see at the roundabout they've put a cycle lane on the pavement, but that's on the opposite side of the road and seems to spring from nowhere.

So presumably I'm meant to stop, cross a busy road, cycle for a bit, mount the pavement, then suddenly pull back into fast moving traffic coming off the roundabout again?

Yep, that's the sort of progress we all like to make. Narrow or not, I can see why some would stick to the road.
