I was about half way to getting to work when it happened (cycling). I could see it happening and thought I was going to hit him, but he ran across the so road fast that I didn't, but unfortunately the driver coming the other way didn't have a chance to stop....and then just didn't stop. He went right under the car's wheel - crushed to death. Not the driver's fault as he didn't even look before running out across the road....but after that how he could just carry on without stopping to check he was alright.

I didn't really see the point in stopping, phoning the police or being a witness either.

After all, it was a squirrel : )

Not sure if I captured it on my helmet camera, but you'll be able to hear me go "ohhaaahh...aaHH!!" as I'm not sure if it'll make it between the car's wheels. Probably didn't catch it. Driver did the best thing by not swerving/emergency stop/etc IMO. The way I've written the post wasn't meant to offend anyone!

Thomas, I know it's only a laugh but your title/subject isn't the best. My heart sank when I read it.

I hit a wee squirrel once in Richmond Park. I was on my motorbike. It was sat at the side of the road and then, ever so calculatedly, ran with perfect timing under my front wheel. A suicidal squirrel?

I've changed the title as I aim isn't to offend people. I've hit a snake and a rabbit on the bike. Only just hit the snake's head - if it wasn't camoflaged I might have seen it before looking down at my gears. Rabbit just ran across and almost got away with it, but just went under my rear wheel.

Thankfully with the squirrel I don't think it would of had much chance to survive so won't be sitting there in pain.

Your post suggesting and making light of genuine human hit and runs is in very bad taste and frankly insensitive given the number of collisions that occur between cyclists and pedestrians with road traffic. Whilst the loss of animal life is upsetting and a hazard whilst you are cycling, the loss of human life in hit and runs as your post intimates is very distressing. It might be better to change your title altogether or remove your thread.

I think you should both get off your high horse. No-one's going to 'panic' anyway, why would they? I knew it was some animal before i even clicked on it, even before he'd put 'don't panic' on. He's not making light of any specific hit and run other than the squirrel is he.

Ive only just stopped crying after i read the title of the post!!!:sad::blush:

;)
Did you stop and pick it up for dinner? They are ment to be nice to eat.

I think with the addition of (don't panic too much) the thread title is fine. Without it it might have been a wee bit insensitive.

Poor squirrel, I hope it wasn't a red one.

Not a high horse bonj, it was a genuine reaction. I genuinely went cold and thought 'jesus, no' - for the incident and for Thomas witnessing it. If I responded that way, others would to - even if you didn't.

Thanks for changing it Thomas.

oh come off it. Think about it, use your brain. if he had witnessed one, he wouldn't just make a post about it on here would he! Could only possibly have been an animal. Don't assume everyone else responds the same way you do - let's not forget, you are french, so probably don't quite grasp the british sense of humour at times.

I wasn't quite sure how it would go down - probably better now you're not expecting anything too serious.

The squirrel was red after the incident ...not sure we've got any red ones in Surrey.

yello, not a problem. I usually don't know where to draw the line with some things ;).

Having seen the aftermarth of a cyclist having been knocked down by a car I can safely say it is not nice! I didn't witness the actual event, but must have got there just after as people hadn't even made it out of their cars - must have been seconds after. That put shivers down my neck for a quite a while after!

Squirrel tastes very similar to rabbit. Get a squirrel trap, half a brick (approved method for dispatching a squirrel is a single blow to the back of the head, its not yours), a suitable knife for skinning (have a google for instructional videos on squirrel butchery) and get cooking.

I'd have to say Bonj, I don't think yello did anything wrong. I wasn't really sure how it would go down with everyone and his comments weren't over powering or judgemental.

I am glad that you weren't offended though Bonj! ;)

Come on Bonj. I would have reacted the same way that Yello did. It's human nature.

Folk have posted on here about some crazy stuff and I wouldn't be surprised if someone posted about a human hit and run.
