I agree.
There is a certain sort of intelligence there which is expressed in Karl's own brand of pathos. I don't think he is an entirely contrived and created character, but I do think that he realised a long time ago that he was on to a good thing and didn't have to put much effort in to reap a great reward.
This probably occured around the same time as he hired Ricky & Steve's agent.

He did a documentary some years back where he spoke to Will Self and the guy kicked Karl out of his house. He is thick, but has a child-like sense of wonder at the world. Sometimes Ricky and Steve go too far but he seems to give it back on the podcasts.
Edit: I want to see the guy on QI!
