I think I'll go for a boot, rather than overshoes now. I did ring the company selling the ones in my original post and they said they were rubber with a neoprene lining inside and also a breathable mesh lining. I'll keep searching online in case I see something more suitable. Thanks for your help.
IMO you need something more sturdy, like this - more suggestions at the bottom of the linked page.

another option would be to just get wet feet, and keep a dry pair of shoes AND socks at work
True, but feet get colder when wet in my experience.

I cycle in soft leather, goretex lined hiking boots (I occasionally use gortex lined hiking shoes as well) and only ever have wet feet if I have been through water that is deeper than the boots are or it was raining that hard the water has run down my legs and into the boots when I have not put my waterproof trousers on. I have always cycled in them and found them great for it - just remember to bend your ankles forward (as though ski-ing) when you tie the top 2 laces to give yourself more flexibilty at the ankle whilst cycling (and tie on the outside rather than the middle to avoid getting laces caught in chain). I even use them for our aborted world tour cycling in them everyday for 12 month.

I found that water would run off the ends of my waterproof trousers and down the sides of my trainer though- really need a boot type I think

If it is really lashing it down I get that and because they are waterproof I end up with a puddle in each foot. I take clean socks with me to work and leave my work shoes at work. My office looks like a bed sit, I have spare shirts, wash kit, shoe cleaning kit all in there.

Pat & Pete- thanks very much for you suggestions- definite possibilitys, ideally I think a shorter one may be more comfortable.
I'll try and get measurements tomorrow.

Try to go to a TKMax for suggestions, they always have a lot of outdoor footwear at reasonable prices.

I decided to give these a try in the end. Were fine in the light rain tonight- let's hope ok when it's chucking it down.
