I genuinely like this one. My grandma used to have a Ken Dodd record and she was a big fan, so I used to hear it a lot when I was round there.

Knotty Ash is a real place?

I said that when I went to visit my Scouse mate from uni, we passed a road sign and I was amazed. She gave me the dirtiest look I've ever received!

Saw Ken Dodd at Carlisle Lanes Centre a few years ago. He was fantastic and does go on well into the early hours, but the time passes so fast you don't realise.
How he remembers everything and responds to the audience is incredible. He tells everyone what time the last bus and train times are and when the car park's shutting so people can get home!

He has a running themes about the Inland Revenue and how long people will be there for... bringing out his packed sandwiches and a thermos asking, "Did you not bring yours?".... and no bad taste jokes or swearing- just shows that timing is everything!

He ran my granny over once.

By which I mean that he was rushing out of a stage door and she was walking on the pavement and they got tangled up and she fell over. Despite being a busy man he took her inside the theatre and sat down withy her and made sure she was alright and got her a cup of tea and sat with her while she drank it, then escorted her outside and talked some more and she was totally charmed by him.

This was in the 60's in Liverpool.

My friend's aunt and uncle were Ken Dodd fanatics, they used to go and see him at every opportunity they could. They became good friends of his and reckoned he was one of the nicest and most down to earth people you could meet.

In the mid sixties, my father was driving us through Gt Yarmouth town centre when he spotted Ken Dodd walking along the street. He pulled in and asked Ken if he could speak to his children in the back of the car. We were sitting there a bit stunned that Dad had done this - Ken was at the height of his fame then - and we could hardly utter a word.

He was great! He spoke to us for well over ten minutes, even though he was on his way to the theatre for a performance, and had us in stitches. He took my and my sister's names and address and a week later we got two parcels with hand-written notes about our meeting and a huge pack of Ken Dodd joke stuff and signed photos. Somewhere in the loft is my membership of the Ken Dodd Fun Club

Top bloke just for that, imho.

My parents took me to see Doddy in the Liverpool Empire in the mid 60's when he was at the height of his powers. I kid you not the St John Ambulance were carrying out members of the audience who where incapacitated through laughter. The more people the St John’s rescued the harder Doddy worked it was like he was in competition with them.

He was forced to close the show when the manger walked on stage and man-handled Doddy off in to the wings. He could be heard shouting out gags long after the curtain had come down and the lights had come up.

One of, if not, the nicest people in the business they call "show."

I've crossed paths professionally with Sir Kenneth on a few occassions and he has always been amazing to work with, considerate and best of all funny ( and believe me - most comedians aren't always the latter.)

He once missed a flight as a friend of mine had gone to see him in Knotty Ash and he was such a good host that he wouldn't even tell my mate it was time to go so they just sat talking for hours.

All these stories make me feel really crappy about having started this thread with "Never liked the man". What I should've said - what I actually meant - was his comedy (insofar as I knew it) was never my cup of tea. I didn't of course dislike the man - never met him. From all these people who did, he sounds like a top chap!

I'm a big fan of modern comedy but at 42 I can still remember a few of the old masters.

When you think how much work and effort and time on stage they put in to their acts - you have to laugh when modern comedians think they've done a shift by touring for a month and being on stage for an hour and a half max a night.

Respect is due to Ken Dodd / Bob Monkhouse etc, etc, etc - for dedication alone.
