May I have it minuted that I in no way support the bicycling burglars, or their grubby crime, or their gun-wielding tactics.
I still have trouble disassociating the fact that it would take one nurse, 320 years to earn the amount that the nicked baubles were supposedly worth.
I can't get my head round that.

Who is Kim Kardashian? Is this a Star Trek thing?
I keep seeing the name on internet/TV
Exactly what is she (& the seeming clan) famous for?
Are the singers, musicians, actors scientists??

a derogatory term for the sport of football, derived from the female name Wendy?
I'd assumed it was derived from Wendy house, but I'm not English so don't use either term. (I won't add the colloquial Australian for football as it sounds deeply racist to UK ears)

I think the analogy is good. Footballers are paid millions for happening to be one of the 10 or 20 people in the world who are really good at a completely arbitrary set of skills that happen to be in high demand. They also get paid much more than nurses and do nothing to make the world a better place.

I pay no attention to reality TV, but it seems like she is the best in the world at the completely arbitrary set of skills that make you a internet/reality star.

I can't see the difference, except football is more (but not exclusively) for men, and whatever it is that Kim does is more (but not exclusively) for women.

But exactly what they famous for?
What do they do?
Her husband is a very successful musician. She started her wealth from her dad (I think he defended OJ?). I think she started her career on reality TV which gained her exposure and money She is now incredibly successful at marketing her image and profiting from it. It hurts nobody. And she does it exceptionally well. She surrounds herself with people much smarter than her who maintain it.

Nah, it's a duff analogy. There are countless examples of footballers (at all levels) doing good in the world but they are rarely reported or acknowledged.

Kardashian as I said has essentially monetised fame, an entirely personal endeavour which I don't think is right, but she isn't comparable to football.

Footballers aren't paid a lot of money because they do good in the world, they are paid a lot of money because millions of people want to watch them play football. They would be paid the same amount of money if they did no good in the world, and indeed if they did harm that was short of criminal or a public relations disaster. Kardashians are paid a lot of money because millions want to watch them on TV and follow them on social media. For all I know she "does good in the world"

As someone who dislikes both professional sports and reality TV, I can't see any fundamental difference. They happen to be well remunerated for rare skills that are in high demand. Neither gets paid for anything that is inherently useful to society. I'd rather they all got paid less, and nurses got paid more, but that's not the world we live in.

Some people live pretty mundane lives- work, kids, bills so they want escapism that won't cost much so they follow celebs and dream about the kind of life they could never have.

There is the heart of the matter. Lots of people have some understanding of the skills and attributes needed to be a footballer, or at least think they do. For Kim Kardashian it is hard to accept that it is a skill and harder to understand why there is a demand.
Do you really think she's the brains behind it? She has a team of people orchestrating the whole thing. Dealing with press, marketing, PR. There is a huge amount of skill behind this from Kim AND her team. As for her demand. Well the success she enjoys clearly demonstrates its existence.

She is no different to pretty much all other self employed people who sell products that are not harmful but not in a worthy role.
