I'm about to start a new job in the West End (Shaftsbury Avenue).. anyone recommend a good route from Kingston? Options seem to be Puntey Bridge, then Kings Road, or A3 to Wandsworth and pick up the CS8 cycle route... Anyone do this commute regularly? Any tips welcome..

A3 around Kingston not particularly for the faint-hearted. You could do a nice detour through Richmond Park (depending on where you're starting) then across to Putney Bridge and then along the Kings Road to the Embankment. That's the route I'd take, anyway.

@Bikechick - thanks
@Buddfox - thanks - i'm coming from Norbiton way - so going through the park to get the Putney Bridge would add about a mile as opposed to the A3. I came back along the A3 last night as Priory Lane was closed due to an accident (currently commute from Hammersmith) and it wasn't too bad. The footpath is a shared cycle lane... car fumes were the only drawback...

+1 for adding a single mile to go through Richmond Park. I would go up Coombe Ln, left into Warren Rd, into the park at Laddersill (sp?) Gate, down Broomfield Hill, to Roehampton Gate, Priory Ln, Upper Richmond Rd, Bolan Bridge, Lower Richmond Rd, Putney Bridge, Right towards Hurlingham Park, Straight across at the very end (by PC World), Imperial Wharf, Lotts Rd, CS8,Whitehall, Traf Sq>

I used to commute from Surbiton to Victoria. The route I took (if it helps) was to go via the A3 (on the shared use footpath) into Wandsworth, round the one-way system and over Wandsworth Bridge. Turn right into Townmead Road immediately after the bridge (I think it's a bathroom place on the corner) and follow that around, turning right again into Lots Road. Turn right at the end onto Chelsea Embankment and then left at Military Hospital Road. That takes you pretty much into Victoria.

Isn't Warren Road a private road? Are you allowed to cycle down it? I was going to go that way for a journey once but re-routed just incase.

I go down it every day, pretty much :thumbsup:
Geezer on the gate is always cheery enough and we say afternoon to one another. He has never asked me for my papers, as of yet!

Just a quick follow up note. I've tried a couple of different routes now. I came home on Friday night via Westminster, then Boris' CS8 route all the way to Wandsworth - then out the A3 to Kingston Hill. This was an ok cycle - Boris's blue route was very good - but Wandsworth to Kingston Hill wasn't too pleasant and it is a longer route (took 10 minutes more that the Kings Road option though there was a strong head wind). I have also tried A3 from Kingston Hill to the top of Putney High Road rather than going through Richmond Park. I quite like this route - it's shorter and quicker than the Richmond park route - but not a scenic. I'm going to stick to this route going forward - and save the Richmond Park route for days when I'm not in a hurry...

Sounds like you've found most of the usual routes. I commute from Surbiton to near Waterloo. Favourite and most used is through Richmond Park, Putney Bridge, Kings Road then down onto the North Embankment and CS8. A bit longer than the others but usually just as quick as you have longer stretches between lights and other junctions that will slow you down.

This used to be part of a slightly longer ride for me many, many years ago.

Things have changed, trafficwise, and I have no cycled this route for yonks. but...

1. Kingston Hill is a beast of a thing to start a commute with and a horrid, looming threat on the way home. I enjoyed it in my 20s, but would not like it now.

2. I used to join the A3 at the bottom of Kingstoon Hill and I found the climb up past KLG quite benign. However, I disliked Wandsworth and opted for the left down to Putney Bridge. Then Kings Road.

3. Once rumbling along Kings Road, several options present themselves and you can change your route as you see fit. That western Approach to London always made me smile.

I don't like Kings rd, my preferred option would be to hang a right straight after Putney bridge, through the fire gate next to Putney br stn and go down towards Hurlingham park taking the last available left then right onto Broomhouse Ln, straight across the lights by PC World and through Sands End, past Imperial Wharf and right into Lotts rd at the mini RAB. This brings you out next toi the river, just shy of Battersea Bridge :thumbsup:

Infact that's part of my preferred route home, in reverse.
