Just a quick follow up note. I've tried a couple of different routes now. I came home on Friday night via Westminster, then Boris' CS8 route all the way to Wandsworth - then out the A3 to Kingston Hill. This was an ok cycle - Boris's blue route was very good - but Wandsworth to Kingston Hill wasn't too pleasant and it is a longer route (took 10 minutes more that the Kings Road option though there was a strong head wind). I have also tried A3 from Kingston Hill to the top of Putney High Road rather than going through Richmond Park. I quite like this route - it's shorter and quicker than the Richmond park route - but not a scenic. I'm going to stick to this route going forward - and save the Richmond Park route for days when I'm not in a hurry...

Been doing this commute for years. By far the nicest is through Richmond Park to Roehampton, Putney Bridge, Kings Road then turn down onto the Chelsea Embankment. Follow all way along to Westminster then get onto the segregated cycle lane right along until you hit the City.

Richmond Park not usable right now though, unless you're an NHS worker.

I cycle from near Norbiton to central London. I have used the Putney/Kings Road route but just don’t like it. Too many near misses. I used to live in Wimbledon so my preferred route is to cycle back that way and use my old route from Wimbledon. This might not work if you’re in Surbiton though.

Basically, I cycle down Coombe Lane to Raynes Park then down Worple Road to Wimbledon. Through the quiet backroads, past Wimbledon Park tube. Left onto Durnsford Road then right onto Penwith road and straight across and up Earlsfield road all the way before turning right onto the A3 (which by then is just a standard single carriage road with slow traffic). Left at Cedars Rd and follow it all the way to Chelsea Bridge, over the bridge and turn right down the Embankment.

There are shorter routes and prob more pleasant ones (I suspect you could cycle across Clapham Common from Earlsfield up to Cedars Lane) but it works for me. Just over 11 miles and takes me 52-55 mins on a busy commuting day. Personal best was 42 mins but that was 6am on a Sunday morning!

Personally from Surbiton I'd take the riverside to Kingston then go through RIchmond Park (if you have access), down priory lane, through barnes common to the river again, hop over Putney Bridge then take the backroads, go along the embankment, cross at Waterloo Bridge, pop on to exhibition road, turn onto blackfriars bridge, then left up to london bridge, optionally taking first left onto the back roads, depending on which part of London Bridge you have to get to.
