these[/url] and it's been a massive hit - but it's pretty vigorous exercise, especially when the wind's up. They come in different sizes - this one's fine for the feeble/small...the bigger they get, obviously, the harder they pull. Anything over about 1.7m needs to be treated with respect.

I bought one of those a few years ago (on the advice of a kite fanatic). It's an excellent first "proper"kite. Not too powerful and easy to control.

Two line kites and Power kites are much more interesting and fun that single line ones imho. A 1.3m has been flown by my 5 year old with quidance (Not in strong wind mind), but is still great fun for me. Certainly a lot easier and safer than the two 6ft stacked Flexifoil Stackers that I got 'taught' with (by!) lol.
+1 for the HQ Symphony, impossible to break and great fun and easy to fly, the 1.3m is a great introduction to the world of power kiting.

Once that gets boring, then a 2m+ power kite will be on order for you, rather than your father!

A question for kite flyers. Do kites come with 'string'? If not, what should longer's Dad be getting to accompany the thing that might take him part way around the world at the first gust?

A serious question.

Kites normally come supplied with line , so you needn't worry. You can buy it in rolls in various lengths and strengths

Sky reels are the way to go. Mine is basically an adapted sea fishing reel used to fly a kite, illegally if line is more than ?60m? metres long, but I've never brought anything down at Gatwick flying on a 1000m line off the South Downs. Winding it in is a bugger though.

As to the OP I like Cody's, and other box kites and own, have made, and fly several.

Going on from another thread, a Sparrow hawk kite was suggested for my fruit feeding bird problem. Can any of you kite experts come up with a DIY design idea ? I t would need to fly in minimal breeze idealy.

Great video Just Jim.

We bought and flew it, it would probably be a bit dull for prolonged flying by grown ups but was excellent for the kids when I let them have a go.

This guy is recognised as the best kite builder in the UK [CLICKY] and his Pterodactyl is great fun to 'play' with (as opposed to put up in the sky and admire), though I saw him at the weekend and he's got a 6 week waiting list, so perhaps not good for this fathers day this time around. He is a pal, i should hasten - but still the best builder around (just ahead of my good self).

We've had the stunt kite ones before and they are really hard to fly. Recently we were bought a 7 foot 'shark' shaped one that is a single like on a power reel thing - flied really well. Bit easy, but keeps the kids happy.

I've just bought a Symphony Beach but mines 2.1m haven't had time to try it out as yet.

I wish I'd bought the 2.1 for me but I don't think my youngest could handle it in higher winds. The 1.7 flys great but I've only had it out in a light wind with the dog chasing underneath it like a loony, back and forth.
