Hi, I've got some knee pain which is nothing new for me, but this is the first because of the extra biking I am doing. In the past I have been advised that light training is still ok as it can assist with recovery, but what is the general feeling with biking, should I just reduce the miles and effort or stop for a few weeks? Don't want to stop because I was losing weight, but if I have to then I will.

Get professional advice
...and probably not from your mate who questioned your bike sizing

Confirm your saddle height and cleat position aren't the cause

What knee issues have you had before?

Patella tendinitis is best avoided...especially as it can potentially lead to rupture and all sorts of nastiness as a result

Use ice to reduce inflammation, peas in a tea towel good

I assume your weight loss is down to diet as much as exercise. If you cut back on cycling, don't increase calories to compensate!

I've had to small knee ops on the righ side. This was due to a gym injury 10 years ago. Easier said than done cutting back while being less active lol.
I'll go back to the specialist and see what she says.

Thanks

Firstly get a bike setup if you're not absolutely confident that the saddle is at the correct height and in the right place on the rails.

Next, look at your cleats. Check that your feet are clipped in - assuming you do use cleats - in the same posture as when you sit on a table and allow them to dangle. I am just recovering from a sore knee caused by fitting new cleats; after three rides and knee pain I realised that the cleats were set so that my left foot was putting a slight twist on my knee, not much but enough to upet it and cause soreness. I swivelled the cleat by a degree or two, meaning that the foot is floating in its natural posture on the pedal without any twisting torque on the joint and the soreness has cleared up, straight away. I don't think the position of my foot has changed; it's just that there is no longer any twist on the knee.

What was done in those ops? If meniscus trim, quite possible you now have articular cartilage wear, aka arthritis

I should really know what I had done, but cannot remember the medical name. Basically I had what was called a "traction injury" where by the bottom part of the knee was pulled so the bone went into a point and this caused me issues. I had the first op a few years ago, but the issue was still there. I had another one last year. I can ride ok, and I can heavy squat (the surgeon said there was no reason not to). I just find that for no reason it can be painful just at the bottom and to the left of the knee cap. I am finding that if I do clean and jerks in the gym with light weight it causes me pain after and during the next day.

Make sure glutes hamstrings and calves are in order. Don't overdevelop any muscle group at the expense of others

See a physio with knee expertise and cycling if poss
