Knights Templar Bike Trip 2016 Portugal

Hello fellow riders, on MTB and Road-B's, if you can handle the mileage and love riding under the sun and a lesson in history, read on:

I am planning several bike trips in Portugal in the upcoming year of 2016. These are just some of those, actually re-makes and a novelty that I had to postpone this year:angry:

1-My nº one bike trip should take place in Feb/early March: I call it Megalithic Alentejo Bike Trip.

Route: starting in Lisbon-Setúbal-Megaliths along the way-Évora-Estremoz-Évora or Avis-return to Lisbon; These bike trips are always on bike, no trains or buses, being too tired is not an option, accomodation will be in cheap hostels - I can provide info on this matter. I also own tools that I will be glad to lend, dates are still flexible at this stage. Travel lightly and bring spares. Water re-supplying along the route.

2-March 2016.
Second trip is what many of us already call a classic in Portugal.
Route: Lisbon-Setúbal-Tróia-Roman ruins-Aljezur-Sagres-return to Lisbon. Because I've already done this I may actually postpone it for later in the year.

3-April 2016.
Mini Tour of Alentejo and Algarve- again departing from Lisbon, heading south to Aljezur, crossing Algarve and then round Alentejo(s), return to Lisbon.

4-April or May 2016.
Knights Templar Tour- Lisbon-Abrantes-Castelo Branco/Beira Baixa-Tomar-back to Lisbon. This is the bike trip I am most looking forward because I have not done it - on bike :-) - before. Ideally it should be a 5 night-trip, more than enough time to see more than 7 great castles along the route.

If you are not bringing your bike on the plane, I may have a solution for you. At this stage dates are quite flexible so please write for more details and send me your available dates, so we may find some dates that are suitable for everyone.

Peace and Good rides! signed: Lusitaniarider.

Sounds interesting. Can you provide a few more details, such as
average mileage per day
type of terrain encountered - would we need road bikes or MTBs
cost

thanks

Hello Onyer:
I am about to start my cycling season this month. Because I am working 7/7 I will be squeezing in these tours whenever I have some free time. Thus the dates are quite flexible.

The tour of Alentejo and Algarve will be postponed to Autumn and nº4 - Knights Templar Tour- will become either the second or third tour.
Average per day: c.140Km (from 100 to 160). Just so you get your bearings: Lisbon-Évora is roughly 108 Km and that's usually my minimum mileage.
Gear: my personal suggestion is MTB, because it proves much more flexible in the long term, if we find a trail we'll be able to follow it, we'll be sure to have less or no flat tires at all. But if you do bring a road bike to Portugal, I'm sure we'll manage, I'll just have to make sure we stick to tarmac-surface roads. In case you opt for the roadie be sure to bring a good confortable saddle, since standard (read cheap) saddles that come with many roadies and also expensive (read racing saddles) prove to be very nasty for travelling/cyclotouring.
Road surface: tarmac to farming tracks. As I said MTB trails will be optional.
If you have itineraries that you are currently studying feel free to share your ideas and I'll be sure to give you some pointers and adapt to your must-see-sights-or-cities.
Accomodation: from 15 to 22 euros.
Coffee: from as little as 0.60 euros.
Per day - food included: max 30 euros. Excluding river crossings: from 1.20 to 3.0 euros.
Cheers... ... ...:bicycle:
