Or more accurately doored!

I was filtering along the kerb side of a line of traffic that was slowing for some red lights when the rear passenger door of one of the cars popped open! The car was still moving as it was coming to a stop. I was probably going quicker that I should have been and hit the door and went over the handlebars. The car drove off pretty quickly but the passenger who was getting out stayed to help, even after me shouting and swearing for the first few seconds whilst sat on the pavement where I landed in an adrenaline induced haze!

After a shakedown I realised that the bike and myself were pretty much ok, I've got bruises on the tops of my thighs where I hit my handlebars whilst going over them, I somehow managed to do a forward somersault and land on my arse on the pavement which prevented any further injury!!!

The contact point on the bike was the right side of the handlebars, it's been bent outwards and the shifter isn't quite as smooth as it was, the wheel at the time was bent out of alignment with the stem which, schoolboy style I straightened between my knees. I also have a couple of deep scratches on the fork. If I can straighten the handlebars and the shifter turns out ok after a checkup with the LBS I think I got away lightly. I briefly noticed the dent I caused in the door of the car before it drove off and it looked pretty nasty so I guess we came off equal.

Overall it could have been much worse, and a big lesson is that cars don't necessarily need to be stopped to door you!

Passengers fault, and in this case the driver has driven off after an accident. Hope you aren't too hurt and the bike is repairable.

Drivers are responsible for passengers, and this is another reason why filtering down the inside is dodgy. This sort of thing can happen even if you filter down the outside too.

Did you get details of the passenger ?

Landing flat on your backside can actually cause more damage, eve from a moderate height.
Your legs & arms are articulated & are able to absorb an impact to a greater degree than you're spine, where the impact results in a compression of the spine due to it having only one way to move.

Hope you and the bike heal up well.

Driver is responsible for the passenger and has left the scene of an accident.

I tend to avoid filtering down the inside.
Shouting and swearing (without being overly abusive) is an understandable response in such a surprising/shocking situation until you have calmed down.

I would argue that a dent in a car is not equal to a dent in you, but as long as you are feeling well now.

Keep cycling :cycle:
