Knocked someone off their bike on Wednesday!

What next to go? Will it be those girly padded things we put around the wheel rims for grip and comfort? Was Dunlop just a great big poofter?

Probably saddles and seatposts.

I mean, how many bmx kids actually pedal while sitting down - must be impossible with the ridiculously low and angled saddle height that most seem to run.

Get rid of them I say. Though would look a bit strange lol.

There's a lad round my way who rides a BMX type bike that has no saddle post fixings or even a hole for it to fit into. It is just solid toptube to the back triangle. Must be uncomfortable to ride for any distance.

Been done...

Designed for those MTB/BMX trials where people hop over obstacles and so on. You don't want a saddle in the way when you're landing on the bike from a height, and bending your knees to take the impact. If you have to ride it anywhere, you stand up.

True, but they aren't designed to be ridden any distance, they are designed for doing stunts...

I was looking at one of these in the shop

Trying to work out where your jacksie ends up when you slip off a peddle, I figured you just get dragged balls 1st between the calipers.

I was walking past Cliffords Tower one night, and a bunch of kids were gathered at the top of the flight of 50-odd steps that lead up the mound to the tower. They were taking it in turns to launch themselves down the steps on their MTBs and across to the piece of grass opposite. One little lad needed a bit of egging on, and I think his bike as a bit too big.

As he bounced down the steps and flew off across the grass, I heard a high pitched voice shouting, "Owwwwwww! Me bollocks!"

Could have been a fixie? In the UK at least they aren't required to have a rear brake.

I see quite a lot of kids on bmx bikes with no brakes. I know its a trend made fashionable by many of the pro riders. But I'm not sure if the kids take them off or if the bikes are sold like that. Is it a legal requirement like having a bell and pedal reflectors for bikes to be sold with brakes?

They are sold with brakes etc,

however if you buy the parts and build the bike yourself then what goes on / doesn't go on is upto you.

many pro riders (and competitive amateurs) don't have brakes as it does affect the ability for the bike to perform to its purpous of doing stunts. I see quite a few serious BMXers around here who have very good bike control and have mastered the art of stopping by jamming a foot onto the back wheel - not ideal but it works.

It's the fashion followers who are the dangerous ones.

been done, people started to regret it when they smacked their dangly bits on the rear wheel

As Arch pointed out, MTB trials, similar to motorbike trials riding

you don't slip off - it's a very steady and controlled kind of riding, you do more hopping the bike about than you do actually pedaling it, they have a really really low gear.

At least that one hasn't got the seat post sticking up ... last year I was watching kids doing stunts up and down a flight of 8 or 10 steps and one kid had a seat post with no saddle in it ... it was almost unbearable to watch.

That is probably highly motivating - knowing there's a seatpost just under your starfish would make you concentrate a lot more. I think it's called risk homeostasis.
