My wife's asked me to look into setting up a website through which she can sell some arty stuff she makes. The catch is that she wants it to be able to handle online ordering, with facilities to take payment immediately, ideally by credit card and/or PayPal.

Are there any software packages that enable you to set up a modest retail site like that, ideally that demand only fairly basic skills? (I've done a bit of basic html-ery and I can just about work with css style-sheets, but the who commerce side of things is a closed book to me.

Thanks for any suggestions.

best thing is to find a 3rd party that can supply the whole solution until she sees if its worth the time and effort.

Credit cards are the challenge, she'll need a merchant account (hard to get) or need to go via a third party. I used paypal in the past, but they charge a 5% fee and you still have to jump through a few hoops

Thanks...groovycart looks like lo-effort, but I suspect as has been suggested, that might mean a rake-off. (I don't think much of their site either, which shouldn't matter, I guess, but it does.) When you say 'a third party', what kind of outfit do you have in mind? Any URLs/names?

123 reg have this as an addon - you can register your domain with them, they'll host it and provide everything you need.

They're cheap but they're not the fastest - ie the page sometimes takes a while to load.
