Surely if that figure is huge then you'd advertise that fact. As the world's number one you'd want to stay there. 'Over 20m e-readers sold worldwide, they can't all be wrong' - or something along those lines.

Not necessarily. The question is very much, what is huge? You see this in consoles and phones where they spend ages arguing about the numbers and expectation management. Some of this is also the e-reader market, where e-readers are relatively rarer than people think they are. You would get all kinds of silly journalistic pieces by 'tech' journalists writing stories about is this the 'death' of the e-reader because it only sold x hundred thousand per time t? Or they would write the Kindle 6th generation is a disaster because it sold less in period whatever. And so on.
And certainly the new aura HD does look interesting:-
