I'm not happy wit the stopping power of my road bike. It's especially scary when I've been using my MTB for a while and I get back on the road bike!

A brand that seems to keep getting mentioned and praised for their mighty stopping power is Kool Stop Salmon (Koolstop? Kool-stop?) but a quick look round the usual on-line bike sites only comes up with brakes for MTB

Can somebody point me in the right direction (at a good price) for a pair. Holders and inserts if they're modular. They're to fit a Giant FCR road bike.

Oh and should I be fitting the same type front and rear?

Cheers chaps

Koolstop pad options can be a bit confusing IME.

I sent off for a pair of all-in-one Salmon pads recently....described as 'unversal' fit.
Longer than road caliper blocks but shorter than most MTB pads.

I THINK they would have fitted my road bike ok, but with fairly tight clearances.....and they fitted the mtb perfectly although looked a bit puny compared to the full length v-brake pads they replaced.

In the event....I fitted them to my MTB and my word - do they ever STOP! Great brakes-good modulation, no squeak, plenty of bite and great in the wet. I reckon that had I fitted them to my road bike they would have been a vast improvement over the stock block/cartridges. So look for the slightly short looking KoolStop Salmons and give 'em a whirl?

I'll try to find a link to the ones I bought but you can work it out (eventually) if you spend some time looking at the likes of Wiggle and Evans etc.

I suggest checking whether v-brake pads fit.

If they do then maybe go that way for that extra 30%+.

You're looking for Koolstop Salmon Dura pads (no idea why the road ones are called Dura)

Wiggle have them for £8.99 (pads only)
Yes they look like the sort of thing I'm after. What holders do you use them with? Does it need to be any specific size or is there a range that they'll work with?
Thanks for your help so far

Any road pad holders should work. I think my front ones are in the actual kool-stop holders, but they are identical to the clarks holders I have on the rear.

If you have solid blocks at the moment (not holders and inserts) then I actually think the clarks three-colour pads are good kool-stop alternatives, and tend to be found cheaper with pads, for example these: -

For £18 you get four sets of pads and holders for the front and back. I use the v-brake versions of these brakes on my tourer and have just fitted the same pads on the rear of my road bike. I think they are good.

Thanks mcshroom, just ordered a couple of pairs from Chain Reaction. I'll see how I get on with those first and then change the pads to Salmon if needed
