Just changed my rear kool stop salmon inserts after less than 800km!!

Fair bit of meat left on them, but the water disposal arrow things had pretty much gone.

Is it worth hosing the pads after each commute or is this par for the course during winter?

Keeping rim braking surfaces clean and picking bits of metal & grit out of pads regularly help prolongs life of pads and rims

Loch side.
The water disposal fins are just bogus, they do nothing. Don't worry, if there is meat left, brake away until it approaches the shoes.

The beauty of Koolstop is that you don't have to pick metal out, they simply don't allow metal to embed.

Further, there's no use hosing or washing the brakes. It is like going for a dirty drive in a clean car, it is of no use.

The reason your back brake is worn and (presumably) not your front, is because you use the wrong brake. If you predominantly use the front brake, you'll be safer on the roads and use less pads. But that's a story for another day.
