Does anyone have any idea to what chest size they actually stand for? My chest size is 40.5 (103 metric) and I never know what to go for. I want to order a jersey from France and when I spoke to the chap, he wasn't quite sure and suggested XXL!! I don't think so!

It varies from brand to brand and garment to garment.

With some 40.5 would probably be XXL

With others it could be M. Cycling sizes vary massively between brands

I am roughly a 40" chest and 6' tall. I have jerseys ranging from large to xxl, all depends on the manufacturer and sometimes the jersey itself.

For most manufacturers I am a large, although with Castelli (current jersey brand of choice for me) I am usually an xl.

If you order from the likes of Wiggle or CRC they do free returns so you can 'try' different sizes without too much hassle.

UK made clothing is usually the size you expect.
If it's American the sizing will be on the "large" size, so go 1 size smaller than you think you need.

If its French then it will be small, so go 1 size bigger, and all Italian clothing is made exclusively for the borrowers, and you'll need at least 2 or 3 sizes larger ( I suspect a size XS in Castelli would be suitable only for Action Man ).

I always buy clothes from a LBS so i can try them on.

I don't take XS

Also, if you buy from Wiggle, buy a few sizes, try them on, keep the right size and return the others for a refund, it is free to return using Collect+.
