I'm not sure either. It wasn't a decisive chest-thumping statement designed to scare the rest.
Maybe he just wanted a win. Now try to lose the jersey until the really serious stuff?

If the opportunity is there you take it, surely? It's a stage in the Vuelta, you don't give those up for little reason.
Aside from that, it's his first individual win since Volta ao Algarve in February, so there's probably a bit of wanting to assure everyone that yes, he is here to win.
