Hi there,
As we move into the better weather :cold: I was wondering what the benefit (if any) that bib shorts have over regular shorts or is it a preference thing? I cycle mostly on the road with the odd adventure off-road. I am fairly curvy (a polite way to say fat) so would I need specific womens fit ? as there seems to be a bigger selection of mens clothing and have worn small mens shorts before which were bought in error but are fine.

Cheers as always in advance ^_^

The idea of the bib is comfort primarily. Because there is no waistband they don't pull down at the back when you bend forward, as opposed to just padded shorts.

Thanks but no thanks. I think I'll pass.
A lot of people here will tell you to get bib shorts for comfort and freedom of movement, and also because they won't ride down at the back exposing your skin to the cold. Every one is different,, what suits one person wont suit another. I prefer padded cycling short rather than the bib.

you will have to decide for yourself what is best for you and I have no doubt, you, will make a couple of mistskes until you find the right combination for you. Its all about what you find comfortable, not what others think is best. Good luck.

I wonder if preference for bibbed or not will depend a little on your riding position, Bolt upright shorts only, stretched out aero style then bibbed all the way.

Now of course I could be totally wrong on this, but I know without bibs I show a builder bum.

You might want to look at the options that facilitate comfort break, rather tougher for the superior sex when wearing bibs

I tried some one, but also being on the larger size, they looked hideous if I do say so myself . Shorts work perfectly well for me, better quality female specific ones with a nice soft waist band

Yeah I dislike being cut in half by the waist on cycling shorts. I find shorts with more comfortable waistbands roll down too. either way, on long rides they become a massive irritant. i am not thin, either.

bib shorts were a revelation to me!

I don't have any problems with the shorts. They don't ride down at all and I find them very comfortable. Don't flash my bum to, anyone.

If you do buy bib shorts, try to find some with white rather than black straps. That's all.

I love bib shorts but they are so expensive compared to normal shorts, I bought ladies altura gel shorts for £19.99 the same ones in bib format were going for £49.99.

Bibs are a bit more comfy, but as @vickster suggests, the absurd faff involved in removing them for a pee arguably outweighs their advantages for women. They are also warmer, which is good in winter but not so good as the weather gets warmer. And quite apart from any claims about the shape of the padding, the best reason not to buy men's is that they (quite literally) get on your tits. If you can afford it, it's nice to have a good-quality pair for those occasions when you fancy a shortish speedy spin in comfy minimal close-fitting kit, but to choose regular shorts for more relaxed riding, longer rides and DEFINITELY for pub crawls....
