Hi there,

I'm completely new too cycling in that I haven't cycled properly since high school (other than holiday cycles to the beach).

After buying and being given a couple of 2nd hand bikes, that were deemed useless by my local cycle repair shop, I am going to invest in a new bike. I started a new job recently and it's only about 3 miles from my house and I figured that I should be able to manage that (well at least in good weather).

I also thought I might use the bike for the odd trip along the Canals etc.

I love the Ducth style bikes, but perhaps with only 3 gears they might not be practical enough for a hilly Glasgow, or indeed suitable for the canals etc.

I've narrowed my search to the following bikes and wondered if anyone had an opinion or indeed experience of them.

Trek Navigator 3.0 WSD

Globe Carmel

Specialized Globe Vienna 2

In my heart of hearts I think I prefer the trek navigator, all round comfort and upright riding position, but it is about £100 - £125 more than I had anticipated spending.

I'm hoping to go out and buy the bike in the next couple of days, so your advice, reccomendations would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Hi there, the Trek FX range have a WSD model for most of the range I think.

Possibly a little more 'sporty' than two of the models you've listed but fine for road and light trail.

Quite comfortable too, and ideal for the commute e.g.

Other than that it would be the Specialized for me as seems more versatile.

Hi there beebo, have you tried out the Trek? If you have, or not, go along to a LBS that stocks the bike and try it out. If it is the one you want a hundred pounds is not that much more for a bike that will last you many years.

Hi there, Paulus you are so right. Bit the bullet and orderred the Trek Navigation 3.0, it's very comfortable, probably not very fast, but hey who needs speed. Won't get the bike until next wednesday .....Booooooo.... can't wait to take it for a spin. This will be my first ever brand new bike and I'm soooo excited. My OH is green with envy, he's the keen cyclist in the family and I'm the one with the new bike.

Will let you know how I get on.

I have a Dutch bike with seven gears and live in the hilly Pennines. Gets me around fine.
Have a look here at the seven speed Cambridge Spirit. Very helpful bike shop.

Here's mine up the top of the Emley moor.
