So, I purchased a pair of Lake MX242. What a game-changer. After the fit I ordered size 42, previously I wore 43, and my fitter felt I could go down to 41½. At the start of my first two rides I thought I might have gone a size too large but as my feet warmed this proved not to be the case. As above I have very broad flat feet, bunions and my feet tend to swell in hot weather. I've ridden two sixty milers in the shoes and find them very comfortable. Typically during a hot summer ride my feet would be be hot, constricted, the toes on my right foot curl in a claw-like fashion*** and my feet couldn't flatten out. Post ride the bunions would be red and inflamed and after a long hot day my feet tired - both could last for 24 hours. The new combination of the shoe-fit, new shoes and altered cleat position has eliminated all of this. I'm delighted.
This isn't a sales pitch for Lake but hopefully will help others. The MX242 has an inner and outer shoe. The inner is a soft mesh material that moulds around the individual foot. The outer is leather and has five adjustable panels, three on the right and two on the left, meaning one can effectively mould the shoe around each foot according to need and vary this during a ride. The heels are mouldable but I haven't tried this yet. I may try moulding the heel if after cold weather riding the shoe feels a little large. Anyone who suffers from "problem" feet should consider these. Yes, at £325 they're ferociously expensive but for worth every penny. I'm so pleased that if the shoe proves too large in cold weather riding I'll consider a second pair for winter.
*** this was because at 43 the right shoe was too large and as I tired I would grasp the shoe by curling my toes to keep the shoe in place.
