Hi all
I've decided to get some spd shoes but having size 12 flipper feet which are quite wide there isn't to much choice about unless I buy online which I'll try and avoid at all costs as I always have problems when buying footware ( sizes to big or to small...to narrow or not comftable ) I've found a pair of lake mx160 in halfords which I've ordered in for next Wednesday so I'll try them on before I buy... they come in a wide fitting...also there is a sports direct next door so no harm in trying some on in there although I have heard some people say they are pretty crappy and others say they are good...I can get the lakes for £54 because I need pedals aswell ( current deal ) Which would you guys get? I don't want to spend a fortune on them as I'm not sure how I'll get on with them but also don't want to end up with something which will need replacing in a few months...
Any help greatly appreciated

Take a hop down to the cycle shack in Diss.
They have a large range of shoes in all sorts of sizes. I got my Lake shoes from them and I've had them for a couple of years now and they are still great and get used most days. Hubster has some Muddy Fox shoes and he doesn't like them at all. They have been under the bed for about 6 months or more now.
Hubster has bigger feet and they sorted him out a great pair of shoes (not sure of the make) and they have been brilliant. Not expensive either.

The muddy fox spd shoes are crap, fell apart after 2 winter months. Recently swapped to road pedals and I have lake spd sl in wide fitting and they are great. So lake any time over muddy fox.

I've had a pair of the Muddyfox SPD shoes for almost 2 years now (also size 12, only wanted a cheap pair as it was my first try of clipless) and found them fine, but they are starting to look tatty now so have just bought a pair of Shimano M088 which come in a wide fitting. Got to say they are great.

Will never bu MFX again. got some a couple of months ago and they lasted a grand total of 12 miles and one spin class. The plate in the shoe sheared its thread and because its not a standard plate it makes the shoe useless. not stiff at all. Avoid! I bought a pair of Shimano M064 and couldnt be happier. Only £40ish from Wiggle.

Well I'm now officially clipless as I got the lake mx160 wide fit from halfords size 12 and they are very comfortable.
The sizing is about the same as my trainers which I'm happy with....now for my first clipless moment

Muddy Fox were a pioneer brand in teh early MTB days, but have been sold on several times.

They are now an "outlet" brand manufacturing very basic cheap kit at minimum cost, but living off the old reputation.

I still ride mine - in a way it's good for me that the brand has been so utterly devalued because no-one is going to steal a tatty Muddy Fox - but I don't understand the rationale of buying a brand name because it means something and then turning it into a brand that means 'cheap and rubbish' - I suppose the idea is that if it takes perhaps a decade for the brand to be utterly worthless you've made enough in the meantime to write off the purchase price?

Lake v Muddy Fox is like comparing the Premier League to Sunday League.

I have Lake shoes, (and size 12 feet FWIW), and they are a generous fit IME. I also have some Northwave boots and TBH they are the most comfortable pair of cycling footwear I've ever had.
