Dialling code, first two digits will narrow the area. Third & fourth will give you two or three streets, last ones will give the property.

Start with shop numbers, in a phonebook

I'm afraid that's nonesence . In the GPO days after the dialing code the first two digits gave you the sub exchange but now other comm providers have their own batch of numbers . But the last four digits in the number had absolutely no bearing on the address

Is there anyway of finding out the adress of a land line number , without obviously ringing and asking
So what's her name, then?

You'd be talking pre-BT then? Most phonebooks now are BT.

Yes the original number system was GPO controlled the first person on the exchange got the number 001 then next 002 ( and James bond got 007 ) then as exchanges grew they added prefix's to the front of the number so 001 became 360001. So the number had no relation to the address

We have a friend who owns a number of flats in London. His agent deals with the day to day running of them, but his tenants have an 0207 inner London number on which to contact him personally. When they do, he picks up the phone on Sugar HIll, Barbados.
Support in our company also works that way.
You call the London number before 8am, the guy at the other end will say "G'day mate"
You call the London number after 7pm, the guy at the other end will say "How y'all"
