Doesnt seem unreasonable for land owners and residents to expect to be kept fully informed.

Unless the council is going to invest in extra snow ploughs and gritters to keep the high altitude roads open it seems crazy ,in winter, to expect a road at that altitude to be useable as the only link for some communities.

Here in South Wales some of the mountain roads at similar height have allready been closed once or twice when down at sea level I havent even had to scrape the car windscreen yet.

The area has poor access on country roads, whole villages will be cut off for a period of time. NY council have failed to manage this in time, judging by this Councillor I digress.

Councillor Ady Green (Conservative), said he had never met a courteous cyclist, and asked why cyclists could not travel in single file.

Afnug, if you did not think they were "Landed Gentry" would you have the same attitude?

A cycle race turned up on the road outside my house in the summer. It was 2 hours before the police let me leave in the car. We had no notice of this at all. But all the roads in the villages was blocked with vans and cars related to the race. Not only is it bad planning by the organisers, it is bloody rude.

If it turns up next year the villagers are going to block the road in protest, and rightly so. The organisers have been warned of this already.

As a side note. We also get the Danish under 21 Championship and the Post Denmark race in our village each year, but they let us know in plenty of time and it is great watching It. the locals acts as marshalls and make coffee and tea for the spectators. All the village is involved.

Landed Gentry or a small farmer worried about stock movement (milking). Stock disturbance. Access to work the land for which he has accepted responsibility. A wry smile flits across my face at this "Landed Gentry" generalisation and then in the same thread, 2 posts later "never met a courteous cyclist". Which is the worst generalisation???????

I suppose I am guilty of a generalization but these are the same landowners that breed birds to be shot, then deny the general public access to the land while they charge people to shoot them, if any bird of prey, be it protected or not should do what it does naturally ie hunt for its dinner on their land, they shoot it or poison it to protect the birds they are rearing so someone else can shoot them  I know there is a whole country industry built around country sports but sometimes they just seem a bit selfish and are quick to complain when things are not to their liking.

Afnug, you are digging yourself a deeper hole. It is obvious you know nothing about estate management. Maybe you think we should declare deer, rabbits, pheasants etc as endangered species so these Landed Gentry cannot raise these animals and birds to raise capital to keep the estates running.

I may not know anything about estate management but I don't agree with breeding birds so people can take the pleasure of shooting them, and please tell me you don't condone the killing of protected birds of prey to protect this pastime. I am not anti hunting if the animals are on the land naturally and shot to eat that's fine although its not something I would do. When I was younger I used to go beating and drive the birds & game toward the guns none of these birds & game were bred specifically to be shot

If a farmer wants to rear Grouse as stock and cull them as he would say chickens I would have no problem with that.

Can you explain how I am digging myself into a deeper hole ?

Happens all the time around my way , unfortunately the roads don't belong to the village so nowt can be done , it's only a hour or so then it's passed no big deal , abit of notice would be nice but then again they don't have to do that either ,

I had a belated 'summer' holiday in Swaledale at the end of October once. (Too busy at work to get away sooner!)

The taxi driver who took us there from Kirkby Stephen told us that the road we were driving along had been blocked by snowdrifts the week before. That night, it snowed again and the next morning we had to walk miles in a blizzard to the one local shop, which I think was in Thwaite.

It struck me quite forcefully how cut off from the outside world the locals were in bad weather.

It does sound very dodgy to be embarking on major roadworks in the winter there!

Afnug,

You are clearly so very, very right here. I used to work for some of the landed gentry. All of them lower than a snakes belly.
And they drive Range Rovers........
Can we shoot them for sport?

I lived near a festival site (Marigold Festival) and that was a lot more intrusion than a bicycle race, over several days. I used to sell pictures at art festivals, and many people were happy to be at the festival, but there were always a few who just wanted us to leave them alone in their bucolic splendor of rusticity. I remember Mrs GA talking to a lady who was telling her "Dearie, why can't you arty people just leave us alone?".
