Landline deals

Following the 'post something randon' thread I have decided to post something really boring. I have rented my landline from pipex for years, was quite happy with it but now they have been bought out by Talk Talk. Now Talk Talk dont have a great reputation, but they have started ringing me up and trying to get me to sign up for a different package that they reckon will save me money. I keep refusing to commit to anything and they just won't let it go. Considering they are supposed to be getting me to sign up for something which will 'save me money' (and therefore cost them money) they are doing a hell of a hard sell. They arent doing themselves any favours because I dig my heels in when someone starts hard selling. In fact I am thinking of going back to BT just out of spite. They are really relentless, they phone up everyday and basically tell me I am stupid because I refuse to save myself a pound per month! I'm not joking they are downright rude when they realise I won't play ball with them. I reckon they want me to get a new contract because they have to honour some old pipex terms and conditions but if I change my contract they can hike up the price a later date.

Does anyone know about these things? What are they up to? Should I go back to BT? Are there any other providers to be recomended? I only want a landline, I already have free broadband, and I don't want more channels on the idiot lantern.

I have little to offer, I use BT and have been happy with them for years.

On the hard sell thing, I signed up to paying DD to a charity about 18 months ago. As soon as I was on their database, we started getting calls to pay more. I'll quite happily hang up an unsolicited call but Missus Norm isn't so comfortable with them. After about a dozen of these calls, every other night, the wife took a call and I could tell who it was instantly. I took the phone from her and very calmly told the person at the other end exactly what would happen if I received another call from them. I haven't been bothered by them again.

Tell them you have already signed with BT (whether you have or not), just hang up on them (they are interrupting your time) or, best of all, ask them what they are wearing. That usually gets them to hang up.

I am with BT broadband option 2 and have been very happy with them and have no complaints. I certainly would not take the **** you are getting from your current supplier.

I'm with BT and was quite happy until I had problems with my line. It took three months to get it fixed and I had a huge fight trying to prevent BT taking £99 pounds out of my account for an engineer call out fee which I should not have been charged.
Since then my broadband box went on the blink. BT don't tell you that the boxes only have a one year warranty but they will happily sell you an 18 month contract and then get you to sign up to another one when that one has almost expired without offering a replacement box.
I will be looking to change at the end of this contract.

I was sooooo pleased when I left BT several years ago for the Post Office Home Phone service. Cheaper line rental than BT Option 1 and no onerous contract, free evening and weekend calls including 0845 and 0870 numbers, plus free calls to UK mobiles at weekends as well. A weekend is 6pm fri to 6am monday I think. Plus free calls to popular International Countries such as Oz, main European countries, etc at weekends. I'm very happy with the PO Home Phone. You can pay the quartlerly bill at the Post Office itself which I hasten to add BT wanted to charge £18 for this privilege. They can get stuffed AFAIAC. They still send me crap junk mail telling me I am worse off not being a BT customer, yeah right! plus I get plagued by their f*****g call centre cold calling me and hanging up. B4stards. Feck 'em. I hate BT .

Broadband is with O2 who have been excellent. Service has only failed once in 12 months and that was at 1am about 2 weeks ago, but was ok again later in the morning when I got up about 7:30am.

How do you get free broadband? I'm just wondering, as I was thinking of swtching from my current suppliers (tiscali for the internet, TT for phone).

See if your neighbours have locked theirs ?

Nothing in life is free, one pays for something somewhere. If a deal appears to be too good to be true, it often is. There is always a catch somewhere .
