I really don't know, rich.

But for no scientific reason whatsoever I'd go for the cheapest in the belief that that's what HP did in the first place

That's fine @ColinJ but as Dirty Harry said 'Do you feel lucky?'. I was selling Li-po batteries for a few years for hobby applications and manys the time people would come into the shop with their horror stories of stuff they'd bought from China cheap. They are notoriously fickle things so I guess it's how much do you value your laptop.

@MossCommuter they probably did buy the cheapest but they would also have tested them and imposed conditions regarding quality on their suppliers, they don't want their brand name devalued. Look at the consequences for Samsung.

Here for rides.
the 100 quid one won't be ten times better than the ten quid one and I'll wager the 30 quid one will be much the same as the tenner.

Yes, there is a big difference in LiPo battery quality. Big. Unfortunately you have no way of knowing if they are good or bad other than going for reliable brand names. By that I don't mean you should buy an HP battery, but if the compatible battery is made with Panasonic batteries, it should be good. I recently researched battery prices - the individual cells, 1865 something, and the difference in price is astonishing. I did buy el-cheapo ones last time and they hardly lasted 10 charges. This time I'll bite the bullet.
I took apart a 'dead' laptop battery and as you say it was full of Panasonic 18650s...you see a lot of them powering torches eta. Most of the cells were ok and I made two small battery packs for my bike and they're still running maybe 10 years later. In fact one pack had sat all year unused and wasnt specifically charged before storage....it worked for hours with the remaining charge. Panasonic's are indeed good batteries.

I've gone for the one at 10 quid. I'll let you know if it only lasts a week!
I think I will buy another cheap one. The capacity of my first replacement has finally dropped to ... less than 5 minutes!

It is so bad now that the laptop doesn't even have time to shut down properly before the power goes off.

I will report back on how el cheapo #2 performs.

I just ordered a new battery on eBay for £11.71! I discovered that I bought the last one in October 2015 NOT 2014 so it actually only lasted about 1.5 years NOT 2.5 years. I will be happy enough at that price if the new one lasts 18+ months.

I happened to be walking past my front door when the last battery package was pushed through my letterbox. The battery was only wrapped in a jiffy bag and there is a tiled floor below the letterbox so it was fortunate that I was able to dive forwards and catch it! You really don't want to drop a laptop battery nearly 1 metre onto a hard surface ....

I think I will leave some pillows on the floor below the letterbox this time, just in case.
