I need to buy a laptop - mainly for one of the kids to do their homework on (whilst the other uses the desktop pc). It needn't be fancy - just something robust, MS-Office, internet browser, with a half-decent battery. I might buy a second-hand one.

Any recommendations? Thanks

For your Kid? Get a cheap IMB off the eBay. a t42, pick one up for under a £150 with a decent amount of memory and enough capacity to watch streaming online, play games, surf the net, do home work. Even edit photographs using Photoshop CS5
Cheap enough to be thought of as disposable should they break it.
I've been using one for two years and paid £100 for it.

We bought one of these three weeks ago - on the recommendation of the guy who supplies our, small, business with laptops and PCs.

Very pleased so far. We don't have kids at home anymore though  yeah!!!! At the same time Tesco had a good deal for a mouse and laptop bag for £4.00 when purchased with this machine. Personally I feel many of these machines are very similar and the choice comes down to feel and comfort of use (keyboard), screen and reliability of supplier. This Acer gave us all three and we chose Tesco because we know from experience electrical problems are dealt with quickly and without quibble - basically if a company supplies Tesco and Tesco say "fix this" it gets fixed. Don't shop there much though!

Bought a refurbished Lenovo Thinkpad for £299 with a 12 month warranty recently from here:-

arrived quickly worked straight out of the box and preloaded with Windows Professional. Jane has been very happy with it especially from a typing viewpoint which was important. Too earlier to report on longevity but the battery seems to give about 5 hours of use which is fine for us as most of the time it's used with the mains plugged in.
