When I work on the laptop using battery only the screen becomes irritatingly dim - like me perhaps. Can I do anything about that? It's a Dell Inspiron if that makes a difference.

the battery operation normally uses low light to save power. you can over ride this with the f4 an f5 keys, or whatever the brightness buttons are

Manually is the light button and up/down keys?
Yup, or, depending on the exact model Inspiron, function key ("Fn") and up/down keys.

There should be something printed on the keys, probably in blue, to show their alternative uses in conjunction with the Fn button, as can be seen on the up/down arrows on this Dell Inspiron keyboard.

Well, bugger me, that's even easier!

It is rather easy. Even I can manage it.

On the other thing, thanks for the offer but I'd rather not. Even if you are perpetuating Brighton's stereotype.
