My dad and my mum, both long dead, and both fierce Irish republicans, feckin loved the Last Night Of The Proms, for some reason :-) I think they went to it once, and had a great night out

Yes Youssou N'Dour was excellent; we watched that yesterday afternoon then went out for a walk when the rain stopped. Then Vuelta highlights then TOB and then the Last Night - fantastic as always. As with Youssou we connected the TV to the stereo system and for Land of Hope and Glory we turned the volume right up so that the Albert Hall organ shook the room. Last Night is an annual highlight that marks the end of summer.

Yet in the field behind us calves are still being born. The farmer says his bull is too slow and next year he's going to bring the whole herd into season then AI them all. Lovely anyway to see the little calves frolicking and scampering about while their mums chomp the fresh green grass that's shot up since the rain started.

Great to see the Fantasia on British Sea songs is seemingly back. The WWI songs were great, far better than Danny Boy sung by children who open their mouths too far.
Also less emphasis on the parks, which Lady Byegad always hated, as did I.

Mod Note:- Folks I've been on a clear up to remove the thread spoiling posts. Some of your responses had quotes of these, I've tried to keep as many as possible with some minor edits so the thread makes sense. Let us know by reporting your own posts if you'd like them removed. Thanks

I enjoy this every year. My lad plays a baritone horn for the local youth band and it's always a pleasure to go to his, and the senior band concerts. Brings back memories of the Kneller Hall concerts my Dad used to take me to when I was a youngster.

I usually watch it but last night i was quite busy. To me the last night of the proms usually indicates the start of autumn. It's usually raining and dark by 7.30. The rain certainly was pouring last night!

It's silly jingoistic nonsense which is a feckin embarrassment to watch. If people want to go to it, it's up to them but frankly it shouldn't be on telly.

It's a bit more complicated than that...
It's a celebration of good music. And a party.
This used to point out that the LNOTP wasn't a celebration of Britain, but a celebration (etc). But I guess even such a simple reference to the country I still feel a lot of affection for is too political for the New Uncontroversial Caff, and my expectation that edits are always acknowledged is unreasonable.

I quite fancy going and waving my little flag - don't hold much hope at getting lucky in the open ballot for the 200 seats but think I will apply all the same.[/QUOTE]
It used to be that you had to go to a certain number of concerts to be eligible to apply for the Last Night, don't know if still the case

A bit OT, but as a man of certain age I must say that Katie Derham is looking rather nice :smooch:

Isn't this a little creepy?

For what it's worth I think she's a poor presenter - not knowledgeable and not aware enough of her own limitations. Petroc Trelawney is the same, although he has improved a little. The radio people had the excellent Ian Skelly and Georgia Mann.

I was also slightly disappointed by the sound mix. You could tell by the tone colour in the encore of Pomp and Circumstance that the organ was dominant, but it had been dialled down in favour of the band and audience.
