Thanks. I see the FSA is being very Sir Humphrey when it comes to its safety statements - "There is no evidence to suggest that this is a food safety risk" etc. etc. so if later on evidence does turn up or does not turn up, the earlier statement remains true for either outcome.

Agreed.
Thus far their response has been undewhelming at best.
If there's any shadow of a doubt about a food product's provinence or the integrity of the supply chain it must be considered as less than safe.

There was a piece last night which focused on concerns from various countries about the fraud involved across the EU. The UK cultural reaction to horsemeat didn't get a look-in. Even in France, the reader comments on the Le Monde and Le Figaro Findus website articles, and the articles themselves, don't seem to indicate that they see this as some kind of UK over-sensitivity.

Can't say I'm particularly bothered about it on health basis. At least horse meat probably hasn't been pumped full of growth hormones and antibiotics like some cattle are.

On an emotional level I am not so sure, but just because I used to have a horse.

Much horse meat is full of 'bute' a pain killer horses get when they get older. It could come in handy on a longer ride if it kicks in, so burgers for me please
