It's not pretty, but it's got a wonderful utilitarian kind of look to it which I find appealing.

How not?

Normal brake levers are easier to control than those on drops, even on the hoods. And when you're on the hoods you're more stretched out so you're in a more compromised position.

That's my opinion of course, and we're all allowed to disagree. Apart from Simon.

On my road bike I ride on the hoods and it is just as easy to reach the brakes as when I ride my mtb on the risers. If you are concerned about reaching your brakes on drops then you could always see if you could find some old school suicide levers

you can reach the brakes fine on drops. as long as you don't have the hoods angled far too far backwards.

To back pedal (so to speak) a bit, I love (for values of 'love' equalling 'hate'), the way simoncc actually gave a useful personal comment on what he uses, but couldn't resist inventing a spurious group of people just so that he could depise them...

I don't have any butterfly bars myself, at the moment, but can see the benefits. Frankly, whatever makes someones bike better for them is ok by me. I really don't get the idea of stuff being 'wrong', if it works...

Not spurious. My observations lead to the conclusion that butterfly bars and straight bars generally are for the slower commuter. I aslo see many men commuting on very fancy mountain bikes quite slowly when I know they'd be better off on a bike like mine. I pass these same people every day on my own commute.


As I pointed out, why should I mind what kind of bars or bike people use? I've certainly no reason to depise anyone for their chioce of commuting bike. That you think I do depise them Arch says a lot about how you mind works. I suspect that like many people who strive just a bit too hard put on a caring, reasonable front, bitterness lurks just below the surface. Of course I could be wrong in your case, but as you speculated on my hatred I'm sure you won't mind me speculating on your motives for saying what you did about me.

Good idea. Then you'd be easily identifiable as the petty little people you are. Fancy suggesting someone else depises fellow cyclists for their choice of handlebars. Really!

I'd certainly try them. But I wouldn't want to go through the hassle of fitting them, to find out that I don't like them.
