You don't need to spend £50 on good shirts. I stated with the £7 quids Aldi ones and managed just fine - although when I later got an expensive pair you can tell the difference!

Thus better to spend the £50 now if have it, than waste the £7 on cheapies. Can often find more expensive shorts reduced, e.g. Cycle surgery have a sale on gore wear right now

I think I maybe will start with a pair for just a few quid - Sports Direct or whatever. Funnily enough the bloke in the LBS said he gets people going in all the time who've bought Aldi shorts and then eventually go in and buy more expensive ones.

It's all trial and error at first!

Hi vickster. Yes, I've got allen keys so I can always give it a check over.

There's no way I'll be going anywhere near traffic until I know what I'm doing with it - I live in a cul-de-sac so I might ride it round and round there for a while - give the neighbours a laugh.

Thanks for your help

Be careful going round tightening things up if you've bought a carbon frame as you can damage the frame over -tightening.
The bolts will have a torque figure so you don't risk this happening, I bought a small torque wrench with my carbon bike for this reason
Personally I went the boxed route and had the bike built/set up by a trusted bike mech on my Boardman and it's been faultless so far. However the first bike they sold me had a bent front drop out which my mech immediately saw on taking it out the box and I returned it for another immediately, gawd knows what the Halfords guy would of done if he'd even noticed it....probably got the mole grips out!!
There's all sorts of horror stories about stripped pedal threads, handlebars not fitted properly, loose wheel skewers and such re Halfords bike building so I'd take it to a bike shop first. Also if there is something wrong the bike shop mech will highlight it straight away to you
