My daughter has abandoned her saxophone at our house and I'm toying with the idea of learning to play it. I have never shown any musical talent in my 55 years so am I wasting my time and setting myself up for lots of frustration?
Is it an easy instrument to learn?

jazz keep at it.

I'm a similar age. I chatted with a musician mate recently along these lines. He said - "do with the instrument that which makes you happy"

So follow that advice. Have Fun. Start simply and see where you get to. Don't stress it's about you having fun.

He did also say that I'd left it a bit late...............

And don't forget the neighbours ;)

Just start with a simple first steps guide and enjoy playing with it. if you want to you can then get lessons.

I once played one - I'd started on a clarinet. Stopped in my early twenties and have regretted it since. Certainly can't play one now!

Enjoy it.

There's a chap I've seen a couple of times who takes his saxophone up Hartside Pike to practice. He's not doing it to show off, he hides in a layby ;)

Fab Foodie knows a bit about starting to play, he enjoys it I think.

Tenor or alto? It's a very easy instrument to play badly or passably (the basic operation of the thing is easy, and it's linear so easy to find the notes) and as difficult as most others to play very well. But it's certainly fun trying - I'd give it a go if I were you.

Don't see why not have a go . If you've played reed instruments before you'll probably find it easier or reading music but plenty of people get on fine just seeing the music - someone I know who learned the clarinet and saxaphone was thus.

Just call me Chris...
Go for it, you'll probably get bored after a while and give up but at least you'll have tried it

I've never played sax, just clarinet, but IMO none of the woodwind instruments are massively difficult.

Just do it!

I did the same, I had played the Oboe a bit when a kid (cue: Fnaar) and the fingerings are similar (Chortle) so that helped. It also helps that I cane read music.

BUT

It's not a difficult instrument to play.
To make a sound is straight forward and if you can play a recorder or Tin whistle then playing a simple tune is straightforward.
You may need a different mouthpiece as an adult rather than a kid's and as you progress get harder reeds, but other than that, get your daughter to teach you the basics and have a go.

It'es hugely therapeutic, requires practice and concentration, but I reckon it's worth it. I was lucky to find a good teacher who knows I'm not interested in grades, just playing good tunes for fun, so that's what we do, and we have fun during the lesson. It's ace playing and being accompanied on the Piano. last lesson we did Mozart as a duet and it was amazing.

Beauty of the Sax is that there is a wide range of music you can play, Miles Davis, Handel, Mozart, Show-tunes, Soul Classics, Rock, trad. folk. It's very versatile.

Mrs FF suddenly took-up choral singing having never ever sung in her life or even enjoyed classical music... she's hooked!

PM me if you have specific questions and I'll help where I can!

I am so thankful that I taught myself to play guitar..well I should say teaching myself because it is a neve rending learning curve. Whatever happens in my life I will always be able to pick up a guitar, create something or jus tlose myself in a jam or improvised solo...I will always have something most others do not.

Saxophone is a cool instrument..so I say go for it...also its an instrument that works well with just about any genre..go for it mate, who cares how long it takes or how good you get, its a journey not a destination.
