Leaving front derailleur under tension..

I've just been told off by a visitor to my office who inspected my bike before coming in.

He said I should not leave the chain on the big ring at the front, when parking up.

Apparently I should release the derailleur and leave it on the small ring. Failing to do so might stretch the cable or put more strain on it than is necessary.

I can see the sense in this, but I've never heard of it before now.

What would/do you do ?

What would Chris Froome do ?

What would Keith Richards do ?

I can see that with modern materials this might not be an issue - perhaps when the blacksmith made V-springs for front derailleurs it was a good idea.
