True, but if the council were warned about slippage 15 years ago then they had plenty of time to fix the problem before it got as bad as this!

PS I finally got round to organising the threatened forum walk - link. It is on a Saturday so I suppose that you might be busy watching football, but if not, you know where to find us!
They were warned. But as people down your end found out with the flooding, telling them is one thing, getting them to actually understand it is another matter!

Blimey, this is more interesting than the Radio 2 traffic updates.
Just kidding!

Well from the same council website that said only minimal disruption was caused due to flooding(in Hebden Bridge).
What is on the lower side of the road cannot be classified as a "field".

(I couldn't think which forum was best for this so I've posted it in Cafe.)

For those who might be cycling or driving in this area in the next few months - be warned that there has been a major problem on Lee Wood Road, in the woods below Heptonstall, above Hebden Bridge. The road was being repaired when the weight of an HGV caused a retaining wall to collapse and the vehicle and a big chunk of the road slipped down the hillside. Fortunately for the driver, trees stopped the truck before it went far! Report in Halifax Courier.

A friend of mine thought he'd be able to get through on his bike but he said that the road was completely blocked off, or at least it was last week. We haven't checked since then, but assume that it is shut until further notice. That means you would either have to make a long detour or go up/down through the village itself.

Calderdale council has been given a £900,000 grant to cover road repairs for the next 2 years but this one road repair is forecast to cost £500,000 of that budget so it looks as though a lot of local potholes will not be getting filled until 2015!
A couple of mistakes here.
The cost of repair might be less than the figure forecast, given above. It might be more, it might be less.
The £900,000 grant you mentioned to cover road repairs for the next two years. Was nothing of the sort. It was to help with the cost to local roads, throughout Calderdale due to flooding. Down your neck o'woods you'd know more about that than me.
Road repairs over the next two years will still be met from the £10 million set aside for them. "It's not the only road in need of repair work".
The upgrading of the TDF route through Calderdale will not be met from the above mentioned £900,000 grant, as was said earlier this year. Now it will be coming from elsewhere. Once they know what those standards are. Gone back on what they said earlier in the year, though they're deny doing so.
As mentioned by you the alternate route up through Heptonstall is now the only route and "due to that fact its a priority that the road be repaired as quickly as possible".
When I mentioned that they should try it on two wheels & pedal power I was met with the quietest meeting room I've been in.
IF, they keep their word & reply within the time limit specified, I'll have the full answers next week.

They refused to answer the part about it being reported in 95 & why they did nothing, given that a site inspection had been done.

I was only quoting quotes from the papers!

I walked below the repaired wall the other day and took a picture up the hillside looking up at it. You can see how lucky the truck driver was that the trees were there to 'catch' his vehicle!

I then walked up the bridleway to Heptonstall and took a picture down from that at the next section of wall which is being replaced. This is one that hadn't yet collapsed but was evidently in danger of doing so. I think the driver would have been in much more danger if the truck had gone down there because there were fewer trees to stop it tumbling down the hillside.

Not having a go at you, just passing on what I'd been told earlier this evening.
If it had gone down at the point in the second picture, the Blue Pig might have had an unannounced customer.
Will post the full answer if its given next week.

The residents of Heptonstall are getting mighty peeved - not only is the village now effectively the Lee Wood Road bypass, but half of their pubs have just been closed down!

The tenants of the Cross Inn have been given the boot at very short notice, just a couple of weeks before the village beer festival. The White Lion has a banner up saying "3 days, 2 pubs, 1 village" - well now it is going to have to be "3 days, 1 pub, 1 village"!
