Official Response:
"Several million pounds worth of structures works are already identified and included in a waiting
list; the need for work at Lee Wood Road obviously has a knock on effect for the remainder of
the structures programme. The anticipated cost of repairs is £375,000 which will be funded
from the Local Transport Plan capital settlement for structures.
It is agreed that there are many roads within Calderdale that require attention and there is a
programme of road works proposed to undertake within the budgets available.
In 1995 walls were maintained through the West Yorkshire Highways and Engineering
Technical Services Joint Committee, which was established to provide specialist professional
services to the five West Yorkshire district councils on abolition of the Metropolitan County
Council. Unfortunately we have no records of this site visit and are unable to respond to your
comments
To ensure the safety of road users Lee Wood Road has been subject to monthly inspections
since 2001, which are undertaken by Highways Inspectors who have not identified any
subsidence at the location of the wall collapse. As a further precaution prior to the resurfacing
works commencing the wall was inspected by the Council's consultants on 24 December 2012
who again noted no defects at the site of the wall collapse.
These inspections ensure that the Council is maintaining Lee Wood Road as required by the
Highways Act 1980, and the Well Maintained Highways Code of Practice, giving the Council a
robust defence against any claims arising from the condition of the road.
I hope you find the above response satisfactory.
Yours sncerely
